Se calcula que pasamos alrededor de un tercio de nuestra vida durmiendo, principalmente durante la noche, porque somos organismos diurnos. Este tiempo no es \u201cperdido\u201d: el sue\u00f1o cumple funciones cr\u00edticas para la reparaci\u00f3n del organismo, la consolidaci\u00f3n de la memoria y la limpieza de sustancias t\u00f3xicas que se acumulan durante la vigilia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>El cerebro en mantenimiento nocturno<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Durante el sue\u00f1o profundo, el cerebro activa mecanismos comparables a un servicio de mantenimiento. Entre ellos, destaca la acci\u00f3n del <strong>l\u00edquido cefalorraqu\u00eddeo<\/strong>, que cumple funciones esenciales:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Elimina productos de desecho y oxidantes que da\u00f1an las c\u00e9lulas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nutre partes del sistema nervioso central.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ayuda a equilibrar la acidez y alcalinidad.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contribuye a la oxigenaci\u00f3n cerebral.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Este proceso de \u201climpieza\u201d es crucial. Los primeros signos son claros:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>P\u00e9rdida de atenci\u00f3n<\/strong> y dificultad para concentrarse.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alteraciones en la memoria a corto plazo<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Problemas psicomotrices<\/strong>, como torpeza o ca\u00eddas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inestabilidad emocional<\/strong>, con irritabilidad y reacciones desproporcionadas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Estos efectos, que a menudo se observan en m\u00e9dicos de guardia, conductores o personas con insomnio cr\u00f3nico, demuestran lo vulnerable que es nuestro sistema nervioso sin descanso adecuado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Da\u00f1os a largo plazo en el cerebro<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>En 2017, un equipo de neurocient\u00edficos italianos liderado por el Dr. <strong>Michele Bellesi<\/strong> (Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Marche) descubri\u00f3 que la falta prolongada de sue\u00f1o altera el comportamiento de dos tipos de c\u00e9lulas de apoyo cerebral: los <strong>astrocitos<\/strong> y la <strong>microgl\u00eda<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>En condiciones normales, estas c\u00e9lulas se encargan de \u201cpoda\u201d y mantenimiento de las conexiones neuronales.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pero en ratones privados de sue\u00f1o, los investigadores observaron que los <strong>astrocitos<\/strong> empezaban a \u201cdevorar\u201d sinapsis saludables (fagocitosis astroc\u00edtica).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adem\u00e1s, la <strong>microgl\u00eda<\/strong> aumentaba su actividad, un hecho preocupante, pues su hiperactividad sostenida est\u00e1 asociada con enfermedades neurodegenerativas como el Alzheimer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Aunque los estudios se realizaron en animales, los hallazgos sugieren que en humanos la privaci\u00f3n cr\u00f3nica del sue\u00f1o podr\u00eda acelerar la <strong>p\u00e9rdida de conexiones neuronales<\/strong> y aumentar el riesgo de deterioro cognitivo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u00bfEl cerebro se \u201cdevora a s\u00ed mismo\u201d?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Algunos titulares han simplificado estos hallazgos bajo frases alarmistas. Lo que realmente ocurre no es que el cerebro desaparezca o se destruya por completo, sino que se activan procesos de <strong>autofagia celular<\/strong> y poda sin\u00e1ptica que, si son excesivos, pueden resultar perjudiciales. Por eso, los expertos advierten que se trata de un da\u00f1o real, pero gradual y dependiente de la frecuencia y duraci\u00f3n de la falta de sue\u00f1o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>La importancia de un sue\u00f1o reparador<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>El doctor <strong>V\u00edctor Manuel Rodr\u00edguez Molina<\/strong>, especialista en fisiolog\u00eda de la UNAM, subraya que un sue\u00f1o reparador no es solo una expresi\u00f3n: se refleja en despertar con energ\u00eda, buen \u00e1nimo, claridad mental y capacidad f\u00edsica para afrontar el d\u00eda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Para favorecerlo, recomienda medidas b\u00e1sicas de <strong>higiene del sue\u00f1o<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Evitar cenas pesadas o abundantes antes de dormir.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No consumir alcohol, tabaco o bebidas con cafe\u00edna por la noche.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evitar ejercicio f\u00edsico intenso menos de cuatro horas antes de acostarse.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reducir la exposici\u00f3n a pantallas al menos 20 minutos antes de dormir.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Cuando, a pesar de seguir estas recomendaciones, una persona sigue despertando cansada o con bajo \u00e1nimo, es necesario acudir a un especialista en trastornos del sue\u00f1o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La ciencia es clara: dormir no solo repone energ\u00eda, tambi\u00e9n protege la salud cerebral. La falta de sue\u00f1o provoca da\u00f1os inmediatos en la atenci\u00f3n, la memoria y el estado emocional, y a largo plazo puede favorecer procesos neurodegenerativos.
