En Shangh\u00e1i, nace en 1936 el futuro Doctor V\u00edctor Chang<\/a> cuya madre comenz\u00f3 a desarrollar un c\u00e1ncer de mama y fue entonces cuando se interes\u00f3 por la medicina. \u201cEn 1951, V\u00edctor Chang emigr\u00f3 a Sydney, atray\u00e9ndolo la presencia de su familia en la ciudad. Fue en esta vibrante metr\u00f3polis donde dio sus primeros pasos en el campo de la medicina, marcando el inicio de una destacada trayectoria.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Comenz\u00f3 su formaci\u00f3n acad\u00e9mica en la Universidad de Sydney y simult\u00e1neamente se sumergi\u00f3 en la pr\u00e1ctica m\u00e9dica en el Hospital St. Vincent, donde form\u00f3 la Unidad Nacional de Trasplante Card\u00edaco,<\/strong> el primer centro de trasplantes de coraz\u00f3n y pulm\u00f3n de Australia. Trabaj\u00f3 en varios lugares del mundo, pero fue en Australia (1972) donde inici\u00f3 su carrera como cirujano cardiotor\u00e1cico<\/strong>. (cf CLAR\u00cdN<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

La v\u00e1lvula card\u00edaca artificial<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Una de sus contribuciones m\u00e1s importantes a la medicina<\/a> fue haber desarrollado la v\u00e1lvula card\u00edaca artificial llamada de San Vicente<\/strong>. Era significativamente m\u00e1s barata que los modelos que se usaban, haciendo posible que fuera adquirido por m\u00e1s personas que requer\u00edan su uso para salvar sus vidas, y permiti\u00f3 ser usada por muchos m\u00e1s cirujanos en el mundo.<\/p>\n

\u201cEl Dr. Chang tambi\u00e9n realiz\u00f3 con \u00e9xito un trasplante de coraz\u00f3n a la paciente australiana m\u00e1s joven, Fiona Coote, en 1984, <\/strong>cuando ella ten\u00eda s\u00f3lo 14 a\u00f1os. La menor recibi\u00f3 un segundo trasplante de coraz\u00f3n dos a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s y hoy Fiona es la receptora de trasplante de coraz\u00f3n que m\u00e1s tiempo ha sobrevivido en Australia.<\/p>\n

Como testimonio del impacto que tuvieron sus avances m\u00e9dicos, el Dr. Chang fue elegido Australiano del Siglo en los premios People’s Choice Awards en 1999<\/strong> y recibi\u00f3 el honor m\u00e1s alto de Australia en 1986 como miembro de la Orden de Australia.<\/p>\n

Homenaje a un ejemplar profesional<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Al Dr. Chang le apasionaba compartir conocimientos y habilidades para mejorar la atenci\u00f3n sanitaria mundial.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Es por ello que cre\u00f3 la Fundaci\u00f3n V\u00edctor Chang<\/a>, en 1984, que otorga subvenciones a j\u00f3venes estudiantes de medicina con el fin de llevarlos al Hospital St. Vincent en S\u00eddney<\/strong> para recibir capacitaci\u00f3n en cirug\u00eda card\u00edaca avanzada, particularmente trasplante de coraz\u00f3n. Tambi\u00e9n se otorgan subvenciones a programas que exploran la innovaci\u00f3n en cirug\u00eda card\u00edaca.<\/p>\n

En 1994, se fund\u00f3 el instituto de investigaci\u00f3n<\/strong> que recibi\u00f3 su nombre para honrar su legado y sigue dedicado a encontrar curas, prevenci\u00f3n y herramientas de diagn\u00f3stico para enfermedades cardiovasculares<\/strong>. A trav\u00e9s de estas organizaciones, los avances m\u00e9dicos siguen avanzando y salvando vidas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Par su hija Vanessa Chang, su padre ten\u00eda una fuerte convicci\u00f3n de que el verdadero \u00e9xito en la vida implicaba compartir el conocimiento y la experiencia de uno: <\/strong>\u00abSeg\u00fan \u00e9l, la clave para el \u00e9xito duradero y el reconocimiento de sus esfuerzos era impartir conocimientos, permitiendo a otros continuar el trabajo en su ausencia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Legado<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Lamentablemente el Doctor Chang fue asesinado a tiros el 4 de julio de 1991<\/strong> tras un intento de secuestro en Sidney. La noticia conmocion\u00f3 al pa\u00eds entero y fue condenada como un acto brutal. Sus colegas y pares lo recordaron y lo recuerdan no s\u00f3lo por su destreza quir\u00fargica sino tambi\u00e9n por su amabilidad, tutor\u00eda y trabajo humanitario<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Su vida sigue siendo de gran inspiraci\u00f3n para nuevas generaciones de profesionales m\u00e9dicos, anim\u00e1ndolos \u00a0a buscar la excelencia y la compasi\u00f3n en su trabajo. Su influencia se extiende mucho m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del quir\u00f3fano<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSu legado se refleja en las vidas que salv\u00f3, los estudiantes a los que asesor\u00f3 y la investigaci\u00f3n que contin\u00faa en su nombre.
